From an under-used biomass in the primary sector to tailormade solutions for high added value international market applications
Main project goal
The goal of OLEAF4VALUE is to set up the basis of six smart value chains based on a newly developed 4.0 concept: Smart Dynamic Multi-Valorisation-Route Biorefinery (SAMBIO) for the cascade valorisation of the olive leaf biomass according to its initial composition (Biomass Suitability Index – BSI).
The challengeOlive leaves: biomass underexploited
Olive leaves: Biomass underexploited
Currently, 4,5 million tons of olive leaves are produced annually in the world by the olive oil industry, biomass high in added value bioactive components.
This biomass is nowadays underexploited, being burnt in the fields, given to the cattle, or, in some cases, burned to produce energy.
The opportunityOlive leaves: high valorisation potential
Olive leaves: high valorisation potentialOlive leaves have a great potential for valorisation derived from their high content in bioactive compounds and an abundant lignocellulosic fraction.
The industry is seeking a solution that makes the whole valorisation process stable and economically feasible.
The impactOlive leaves: OLEAF4VALUE
Sustainability and market value
OLEAF4VALUE will set the basis of an industrial stable supply chain able to valorise olive pruning leaves (OPL) and olive mill leaves (OML) in a cost-effective way.
The project will give a new life to olive leaves, solving the problem of its removal from the fields while obtaining high added value bioactive compounds with high-market potential.
Our project partners
OLEAF4VALUE counts with 16 project partners from 9 EU countries
