From an under-used biomass in the primary sector to tailormade solutions for high added value international market applications
Main project goal
The goal of OLEAF4VALUE was to set up the basis of six smart value chains based on a newly developed 4.0 concept: Smart Dynamic Multi-Valorisation-Route Biorefinery (SAMBIO) for the cascade valorisation of the olive leaf biomass according to its initial composition (Biomass Suitability Index – BSI).
The challenge
Olive leaves: biomass underexploitedOlive leaves: Biomass underexploited
Currently, 4,5 million tons of olive leaves are produced annually in the world by the olive oil industry, biomass high in added value bioactive components.
This biomass is nowadays underexploited, being burnt in the fields, given to the cattle, or, in some cases, burned to produce energy.
The opportunity
Olive leaves: high valorisation potentialOlive leaves: high valorisation potential
Olive leaves have a great potential for valorisation derived from their high content in bioactive compounds and an abundant lignocellulosic fraction. The industry is seeking a solution that makes the whole valorisation process stable and economically feasible.
The impact
Olive leaves: OLEAF4VALUESustainability and market value
OLEAF4VALUE set the basis of an industrial stable supply chain able to valorise olive pruning leaves (OPL) and olive mill leaves (OML) in a cost-effective way.
The project has contributed to repurposing olive leaves, offering a solution to the problem of its removal from the fields while obtaining high added value bioactive compounds with high-market potential.
The OLEAF4VALUE legacy
Are you an olive producer or a bioeconomy stakeholder? OLEAF4VALUE offers valuable materials and resources with essential insights and key findings to help you maximise the valorisation of olive leaf biomass!
